The Shutter Studio offer a range of blackout shutters and blinds for customers looking to block out as much light as possible from their rooms. Those who need to sleep during the day, those with bright streetlights outside their windows, or those who are easily woken by early morning light can all benefit from blackout shutters and blinds. From pleated blinds that are built into the frame of your shutters, to made to measure roller shades, our team will assist you in finding the best option to suit your style and budget.

Shutters with built-in blackout blinds

Small gaps between the frame and the covering will mean no shutter or blind solution will provide 100% blackout coverage. For those requiring the darkest of conditions, we would recommend combining plantation shutters with a fully lined blind to minimise these small gaps.

Using a specialised frame, a pleated blind is built behind the shutter so that the gaps down the side of the blind are blocked by the shutter framework. Although still not completely blackout, this solution will always be more effective than using only one form of window covering. The video above give a sense of the coverage provided by blackout shutters in this style. This is a popular solution for nurseries, home cinemas and media rooms, where even small amounts of light can cause problems.

Blackout shutters or blackout blinds?

If you’re looking for dark conditions with minimum fuss, we recommend full height shutters in one of our five white shutter finishes. Although some customers may be wary of using white window furnishings in a room they want to darken, most will find that plantation shutters alone will darken a room considerably when shut, with no further fixtures needed – even in a white finish.

It might be the case that you’d prefer a blackout blind instead of a shutter. We also offer blinds in a range of fabrics and styles to suit every room and window. Both our roller blackout blinds and vertical blackout blinds come in textured, plain or printed designs and a blackout lining can be added to any of our Roman blinds to add darkness to a room. We also supply and fit velux and perfect fit blinds in blackout materials. If you’re interested in blackout blinds, we would always recommend visiting one of our showrooms to look through our full range of samples.
